  • Medicaid
    Medicaid is a health care program for those who cannot afford to pay for medical care. You may be covered for Medicaid if:
    • You have high medical bills.
    • You receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
    • You meet certain income, resource, age, or disability requirements.
    To apply for Medicaid, write, phone, or visit your local department of social services.

  • Medicare
    Medicare is the national health insurance program for:
    • People age 65 or older
    • Some people under age 65 with disabilities
    • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), which is permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant
    You automatically receive Medicare, following a two year waiting period, if you have Social Security Disability Insurance (see information under "Financial. Legal, and Practical Help"). Family Health Plus

Family Health Plus is a public health insurance program for adults between the ages of 19 and 64 who do not have health insurance--either on their own or through their employers--but have incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid. Family Health Plus is available to single adults, couples without children, and parents with limited income who are residents of New York State and are United States citizens or fall under one of many immigration categories.

Most States have comparable health care plans. Contact your State Health Department or local social services department for information on the plans available to you.


State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

This program gives each state permission to offer health insurance for children, up to age 19, who are not already insured. SCHIP is a state administered program and each state sets its own guidelines regarding eligibility and services.
